Yarn is a building material

Well, maybe not. But for furniture fabrication...

The idea was just to get some sound-absorbing material to help with the room's acoustics.

Last year's wall shelves included channels routed in the upper and lower face moulding for sliding door panels. Each of the two channels are only 5/32" wide and spaced 1/4" on center. This means for 1/8"-thick panels, there's only about another 1/8" clearance between them.

So the soft material had to be thin. Nothing cotton worked. Nor sheet fabric. Then I thought of yarn, which, of course, meant sewing it to the aluminum! And to get it dense, I needed as many holes as I can squeeze in.

After some paint and acrylic clearcoat, the yarn was woven to it. Each channel track then got a narrow strip of teflon tape for smoother sliding. I'm not too thrilled about the dark brown. Maybe it could be covered with fabric...
